What should be any nations response to attacks that kill thousands, DH? Hunker down? What?

There have been wars throughout history, and there have been bleeding hearts during every one of them. But the wars go on, unabated, along with the utopian bleeding hearts.

The response to an attack that kills thousands is not very different to the response to an attack that kills one. The principal difference is in the amount of resources that it makes sense to allocate to catching the perps.
 
There have always been wars, and there has always been crime. That does not mean one should do either. When you do the same as your enemy, how are you any better and why should anyone choose you over them? You can not be a force for good if you do evil, it is prerequesite that you uphold for youself the values you want to enforce over others.

So, The founders, Lincoln, Wilson, Ruskievelt, Truman, Johnson, Nixon, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2, and now Obama, are all war criminals? (and others not named)

What did Japan and Germany do that needed to be stopped? Warmongering. They were guilty of the crime of starting wars, invading other countries. Stopping them was appropriate. Applying that same standard to today, it is this country that needs to be stopped.
 
And many but not all the names on your list are guilty. As for the founders and the revolution, that was not a case of one country versus another and so is a different case.
